Obituary of Lawrence Marriner
With profound sadness we share the passing of Lawrence Wallace Joseph "Larry" Marriner. He left us peacefully in the presence of family.
Larry is survived by his Wife of 62 years, Dee (nee Johnston), his children Rob (Jill), Jeannie (D'Arcy), Matthew (Melissa), and his bonus son Rick Sokoluk (Sylvia). He is predeceased by his children Jenny, Nancy and Neil and granddaughter of the heart Jenny Sokoluk. Pappy to his adored grandchildren; Ryan O'Reilly, Kelsey Sunstrum, Stephen Pownall, Sarah (Geoffrey) Hartin (nee Marriner), Hannah Marriner, Taylor Marriner, and Brandon Goodchild, as well as his great grandchildren. He leaves behind his sister Linda (Rick) Cayer and brother Dave (Diane) and their wonderful families.
A Bell Canada Pioneer, Larry devoted his working life doing what he loved for over 30 years with them. His career evolved over time and what began as a youngster climbing poles and installing rotary phones, progressed to include training and development of digital and wireless technology and ended with his retirement from Management. He was best known at work for being a jokester and a tease but especially for being a man of his word who always got the job done. He never lost sight of the path he had followed and always appreciated colleagues at every level of the corporate ladder.
Larry was an avid and gifted athlete who enjoyed hockey, baseball, skiing, golf, fishing and curling. He excelled in just about any sport he took on. Once forced to stop playing physical games, he turned to puzzles, especially crosswords, where his love of language shone. He was passionate about classic cars, motorcycles, trucks, boats and model trains.
Larry was a very social man and he made friends wherever he went. No matter where he was in Ottawa, there was someone who knew him. He would tell you the best spot to eat in any Canadian city and it was always a great choice.
He will be missed for his sense of humour, his skills as a handyman and his love of family.
Visitation will be held from 12:00 p.m. until the time of the service at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 11, 2026 in the Pinecrest Remembrance Chapel, 2500 Baseline Road. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Ottawa Humane Society.
