Dr. Owen Scott Helmkay, a beloved husband, father, brother, and esteemed member of the psychology community, passed away on July 17, 2023 at the age of 58, after battling colon cancer. He was born on May 12, 1965, to the late Barb and Gerry Helmkay. Owen is survived by his beloved wife Lynn Murray, with whom he spent 16 years. He is also survived by his dear sister Tracey Dawson, and his nephew, Tyler Dawson. He was a proud step-father to Emily Flesher (Colton Minor), and adopted father to Evan and Annika Bunkis, whom he held close to his heart. He leaves behind his mother-in law Diane Murray, and brothers-in-law Gordon and James Murray and many other cherished family members and friends.

Owen's journey was marked by compassion, perseverance, and an unwavering dedication to those he loved. In 2021, he received the challenging diagnosis of colon cancer, and even in the face of adversity, he showed immense strength and optimism throughout his battle.

Owen joined the militia reserves at a young age to give back to his community and continued to serve while he pursued his education. A man of intellectual prowess, Owen embarked on a journey of education that shaped his path. He earned his B.A. (Honours) in Psychology from Brock University in St. Catharines, setting the foundation for a life dedicated to understanding the human mind and helping others.

Owen's professional journey led him to remarkable achievements in the field of psychology. He completed his Masters Degree in Experimental (Cognitive) Psychology from Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, further honing his expertise in understanding the complexities of the human thought process. He then pursued his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Ottawa, where he cultivated his passion for aiding those in need.

Throughout his distinguished career, Owen's work left a profound impact on the community. He served in various community clinics, hospitals, and Boards of Education in Ottawa and Windsor. Among these institutions were the Centre for Psychological Services at the University of Ottawa, the former Carleton Board of Education, Windsor Regional Hospital (including the Windsor Regional Children’s Centre and the Windsor Community Mental Health Clinic), and the Ottawa-Carleton District School Board. Owen's compassionate nature and dedication to his work provided comfort and guidance to countless individuals facing challenges.

In addition to his professional achievements, Owen maintained an active private psychology practice since 2004, demonstrating his commitment to supporting others on a personal level.

Beyond his professional pursuits, Owen embraced life's pleasures with enthusiasm. He found joy in running, relishing the freedom and peace it brought him. His pool was his baby and hemaintained it to a sparkly clean before each swim. An enthusiast of Niagara wines, he savored the intricate flavors that accompanied every sip. Furthermore, Owen had a deep appreciation for the arts and cherished evenings spent at live theater performances with his wife Lynn.

In addition to his immediate family, Owen adored his feline companion, Bella, who offered him comfort and companionship throughout his journey.
