Obituary of Edith May Nygaard
November 6, 1928 - November 23, 2023
Peacefully passed away on Thursday, November 23, 2023 at the age of 95. Dearly beloved mother of Betty Anne Nygaard King (Owen King). Predeceased by her dear husband Ray Nygaard and by her siblings Lilian, Douglas and Roy. Edith was born in Winnipeg and married Ray in 1951. In 1955, the Royal Canadian Air Force transferred Ray to Ottawa, where they remained for many years. Edith made a name for herself as a Brownie and Girl Guide leader, and won a Good Neighbour award from a local radio station. Beginning in 1971 she worked at the Kent St. Canadian Tire store, where she was known to customers and colleagues as a very hard worker, for which quality the store owner honoured her with the inaugural Employee of the Year Award. Following Ray’s death in 1988, Edith left Ottawa briefly, enjoying several winters in Florida. Later, she returned to Ottawa to live at the Tannenhof Co-Operative Homes for seniors, where she became president and received a community service award from the Premier of Ontario for her service to the senior citizens in that residence. Edith was a natural leader who enjoyed nothing more than keeping busy organizing events for friends and neighbours. She was an especially warm, outgoing person who was loved by everyone she met. For those who wish, donations to the Canadian charity of your choice would be appreciated.
