Obituary of Douglas Edwin Newman

Surrounded by his family our father passed away on Wednesday May 8, 2024. Douglas Edwin Newman was born in rural Saskatchewan on May 14, 1936. The first child of Eileen Margaret Clay and Alfred Newman. Douglas’s only sibling, his younger sister Ellen predeceased him in 1992. When his father left to serve our country during WW2 he and his mother moved to Fairlight, Saskatchewan to wait out the war on his maternal grandparents farm. During this time he learned the value of hard work and the importance of family. He attended highschool in Weyburn, Saskatchewan and reaching the height of 6’4” at 16 he was a natural on the basketball court. The families last move was to Regina and it was here that he met his wife June Hain. Following their wedding on August 27, 1960 the young couple moved to Ottawa where he began his 35 year career with Revenue Canada. The young couple made lifelong friends who introduced them to Norway Bay and with their encouragement bought a lot on a hill where they built a cottage on stilts, it was truly unique for its time and is still standing to this day. The couple had two daughters, Nancy arrived in 1965 and Darcy in 1971. The Family moved to Winnipeg in 1975 along with many others from the Ottawa area to open a taxation center that would serve the growing population of western Canada. Returning to the Ottawa Valley in 1978 the family settled in Rideau Township and a home on Century Road. The small acreage was barren and Douglas spent countless hours improving the landscape, adding a pool, and a pond complete with a fountain. It was a beautiful oasis where they entertained their many and ever growing group of friends. Upon retirement Douglas took up woodworking and he and June travelled the world and enjoyed many cruises. His loving wife of 63 years,  June passed away in September of 2023. Douglas is survived by his daughters Nancy (Blair) and Darcy (Roberto) and grandchildren Paige, Austin and Meghan. In memorium donations to The Ottawa Heart Institute or Canadian Cancer Society would be appreciated.
