Obituary of Denise Patricia Hughes (Smith)

Family is very saddened to announce that Denise Patricia (Smith) Hughes, aged 86, passed away on July 13, 2024, in Ottawa. Denise was born on May 30, 1938 to Gabrielle (D’Aoust) Smith and Al Smith. She was married to David Bernard Hughes and they spent their lives together until David passed away in 2018. They were married for 64 years and she dearly missed the love of her life.  We can only take solace in the fact that they are together again.

Denise (and David) had six children together.  She was predeceased by her infant son Gary (1958), and her eldest daughter Linda Hughes Martel (2013).  She leaves behind Diane Hammond (Stephen), Michael Hughes (Theresa), Alan Hughes (Lisa), and Brenda Hughes (Dave).   She is survived by her younger brother Desmond Smith (Nancy), her sister-in-law Elsie Robert (Don), her brother-in-law Denis Lamothe and her son-In-law Robert Martel.

She was extremely proud of all her grandchildren.  Christine and David Hammond; Brent Martel (Alicia), Lisa Martel-Lachapelle (Shawn), and Derek Martel (Megan); Nicole Hughes (Nathan) and Jeffrey Hughes; Phil Hughes, Mitchel Hughes, Skylar Moore (Katrina) and Travis Hughes.

She got great joy from her great-grandchildren – Owen, Emery, Quinton, Daphne, Josee, Bryson, Hadley and Adalynn.

She also will be missed by her nieces and nephews – Stephan Smith (Kimberly), Robert Lamothe (Tania), James Lamothe (Karen), Stephen Robert (Sandra), and Lee Anne Blum (Rob).

Denise was a loving wife, a dedicated Mom, and a doting sister.  She was a creative person who in her younger days produced many a crafty project.   She had a variety of jobs as an executive assistant and later in life enjoyed meeting the public through her part-time job at Tim Hortons in Stittsville.  The family is very grateful for the care given by Dr. Tara Jennings and the staff/volunteers at Ruddy Shenkman Hospice.  Donations to the Hospice or the charity of your choice honoring her memory would be appreciated in lieu of flowers.  Please feel free to wear light and comfortable clothing.

A private family celebration of life will be held at Pinecrest Cemetery.
