It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Carole Joan (Crawford) Merkens, Miss World 1963 and a cherished icon of grace, beauty, and philanthropy, on December 18, 2024, at the age of 81. Beloved mother of Stephan (Nicole) and Daniela (Andrew) and treasured Oma of Alexa, Zoe, Nora and Lily. She is predeceased by her husband Klaus of 56 years, mother Edna and father Vinton.
Born on August 31st 1943 in Kingston, Jamaica, Carole Joan Crawford captured global admiration when she was crowned Miss World in 1963 at the tender age of 20. As the first Jamaican and Caribbean woman to win the prestigious title, her victory marked a monumental moment in history, bringing pride and recognition to her homeland on the international stage. At just 5 feet 3 inches tall, Carole defied conventional expectations, proving that beauty transcends boundaries and breaking barriers for women of diverse backgrounds.
