Obituary of Raj Kumar
Raj was the loving mother of Yatish (Nadira) and cherished her grandchildren Maya and Alex. Raj was predeceased by her beloved husband Virendra Roy Kumar, brother Chand Narain Mathur, and parents Anand and Kumti Mathur.
Raj was born in Allahabad and raised in New Delhi, India where she attended Delhi University / Miranda House and obtained her BA Commerce degree. She married her childhood sweetheart Roy in 1964 and together they lived in exotic locations like Lagos, London and Hong Kong before returning to India to settle down. She worked at the Canadian High Commission and subsequently emigrated to Ottawa in 1983 where she embraced her Canadian identity. She went from saris to skirts, never looking back. Raj was a foodie and had a weakness for scampi and chips. She will forever be fondly remembered by friends and family for her eternally positive outlook, the story of when she and Roy hung out with the Rolling Stones, their neighbour Peter Sellars in London, and her signature bright red lipstick.
Thanks to all those who were there for Raj in the final phase of her life including Andre and Madhu who kept in regular contact with her despite being far away, and the caring staff at Thorncliffe Place. Raj was celebrated at a private funeral on January 11th, 2025. In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider a donation to the Canadian Diabetes Association.
