Obituary of Mary Ellen Kelly
Mary Ellen Kelly, revered for her loving nature, courage, and friendliness, passed away peacefully on January 21, 2025, at the age of 84 in Ottawa, Ontario. Born on February 1, 1940, in Kingston, Ontario, Mary Ellen's life was one marked by dedication to her family, her friends, and her many passions.
Mary Ellen's life was built on a foundation of love and hard work, a sentiment deeply felt by her husband, James (predeceased). She was a source of strength and inspiration to her daughter, Elizabeth, her son, Patrick (Jillian), and grandson William, instilling in them values of kindness and resilience. Incredibly important in her life was her brother John (Helen), nieces Lesley (Rich) and Susan, and their children Marin, Sam and Trevor. Her nephew Murray (Nancy) and family friend, Nadia, also held a special place in her heart.
Mary Ellen's journey as a health professional began at Kingston General Hospital, where she trained diligently to become a Radiation Technologist, a role she would embody with grace and professionalism throughout her career. She dedicated her working life to the medical field, serving at Grace General Hospital, Civic Hospital, and Royal Ottawa Hospital. Her commitment to her profession was only matched by the compassion she showed to her patients and colleagues, leaving a lasting impact on the lives of those she encountered. She was also an active volunteer, after retiring from the hospital.
Outside of her professional realm, Mary Ellen's zest for life shone brightly through her hobbies and interests. She was an avid traveler, taking every opportunity to explore the world with her close-knit group of friends. Mary Ellen's condo was her sanctuary, a place where she enjoyed the simple pleasures of life and where she cherished spending time with her beloved grandson, William.
Mary Ellen's story is not one of an end, but rather a celebration of a life well-lived—a life filled with meaningful connections, a dedication to helping others, and an enduring spirit that will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed, yet her memory will forever be a guiding light to her family, friends, and all who were fortunate enough to cross paths with her.
The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to the compassionate caregivers from The Redwoods Retirement Home, Champlain Health, Dr. Hacker, Dr. Douglas, and the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice (Hospice Care Ottawa) who provided support and comfort during Mary Ellen’s final days.
At Mary Ellen’s request, a private funeral will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ruddy-Shenkman Hospice or Furry Tales Cat Rescue.
